LIU Combining Brooklyn & Post Athletic Programs, Joining NEC

LIU-Post Athletics

And then there were 75! We have a new DI men's lacrosse program on the horizon and yet again it's coming from DII, like Merrimack

Long Island University is combining the athletic programs of LIU-Brooklyn and LIU-Post and will compete in the Northeastern Conference (NEC). This change is set to take place in the fall of the 2019-20 school year. It was announced at a press conference this morning.

LIU-Brooklyn is already a member of the NEC while LIU-Post is an affiliate member of the NE-10 for Football and a full member of the East Coast Conference (ECC) in all other sports which includes men's and women's lacrosse. LIU will be able to compete in NEC and NCAA tournaments right away.

The only campus that has men's lacrosse is LIU-Post. Last season in 2018 LIU-Post reached the ECC championship game where they fell to NYIT by a score of 10-5. LIU will be the ninth men's lacrosse team in the NEC, as Merrimack also joins in the fall of 2019.

Both the LIU-Post and LIU-Brooklyn campuses have women's lacrosse. LIU-Brooklyn went 3-13 last season while LIU-Post went 14-6 and won the ECC championship. They would lose in the NCAA DII tournament to Adelphi in the first round. The LIU women's program will be the 119th DI program.

Both men's and women's lacrosse programs will play on the Post campus along with both soccer teams, field hockey, football, and more.
