MLL Week 15 Recap: The Playoffs are Set

After the results from Saturday's games the MLL playoffs have officially been set. The last two sports in the playoffs were decided on Saturday as the Dallas Rattlers and Chesapeake Bayhawks had already claimed the top two seeds. The Denver Outlaws and New York Lizards would both get wins on Saturday to punch their ticket to the playoffs.

In addition to the playoff deciding games there were two games that really didn't mean that much. Out of those games we did get some great individual and team performances. One game had implications on the future as we found out who will get the top two picks in the 2019 MLL draft. Ohio will have the first pick and Boston will have the second pick.

Boston Cannons 23 vs Ohio Machine 14

This was one of those games that didn't mean much but did have some significance. First off, this was the final game for two of the Cannon's key veterans Max Seibald and Mitch Belisle. They both announced earlier in the week that they would retire at the end of the 2018 season. Secondly, this game decided who will have the first and second draft picks in the 2019 draft.

Boston's offense dominated all game, especially in the first half. The Cannon's would go on a 14 goal run in the first half to kick things off. Mark Cockerton was the main source of offensive firepower as he had eight goals on the day. Zed Williams, and James Pannell would also have big performances as Williams had two goals and Pannell had four. That impressive offensive performance would help the Cannons secure the victory to close out the 2018 season.

Ohio looked straight up bad in the first half. It wasn't until the third quarter that they would start to find any rhythm at all. Bryce Wasserman and Justin Guterding would lead the Machine offense as they would each net four goals a piece.

Ohio finishes the 2018 MLL season sitting in last place with a 3-11 record. Boston finishes in 2nd to last place with a 5-9 record.

Dallas Rattlers 14 vs Florida Launch 13

Another game that didn't mean much at all as Dallas had already secured the first spot in the playoffs a few weeks prior. This would end up being a great game as Dallas would have to comeback big time to secure the win.

The Rattlers rally would end in the final few minutes of the game with two goals that secured the victory. Before that Dallas was down at half and then they came out and dominated the second half of play. Ned Crotty and Jordan MacIntosh would help lead that offense. Crotty had three goals and MacIntosh would have two. That offensive firepower would help the Rattlers go on a nice run lat in the third and into the fourth that would help secure the victory.

Florida started the game off very hot as they pushed out to a 10-4 lead at the half. Their offense wouldn't be able to garner that kind of success in the second half as they let Dallas walk right back into the game. The driving for e behind Florida's offense was Kieran McArdle and Connor Buczek who each had three goals a piece.

Florida finishes the 2018 season 5-9 as they miss the playoffs. Dallas has earned the top seed in the playoffs as they had an 11-3 record on the regular season.

New York Lizards 18 vs Cheseapeak Bayhawks 11

This was a big games as the Lizards needed a win to secure a playoff spot and they did just that. The Lizards used a big offensive performance in the first half to help secure the victory. In this game Rob Pannell would score his 75th goal on the season which broke the MLL single season record that Pannell held.

New York would use a big first half to help them get a head and secure the 18-11 victory over the Bayhawks. The Lizards offense would be lead by Rob Pannell, Will Manny, and Joel Tinney. Pannell would finish the game with seven goals as Manny and Tinney would have three a piece. It was a big performance that would help get the Lizards the win and punch their ticket to the playoffs.

The Bayhawks would struggle in the first half but would finally put it together in the second half. Even with the impressive showing of offense in the second half the Bayhawks just couldn't overcome their first half woes and secure the win. Chesapeake's offense would be lead by Josh Byrne and Lyle Thompson who each had three goals.

New York and Chesapeake will both be in the playoffs as New York punched their ticket with this win and Chesapeake punched their ticket two weeks ago.

Atlanta Blaze 14 vs Denver Outlaws 15

This was the best game of the weekend as it went right down to the wire. The Blaze and Outlaws would battle it out for a playoff birth. Even though there was an hour weather delay that didn't seem to slow down wither team at all.

Atlanta would dominate most of the first half up until the end of the second quarter. That is when Denver took over and Atlanta struggled to get back the lead once they lost it. The Blaze's offense would be lead by Kevin Rice and Christian Cuccinello who each had a hat trick to their name. It was a great performance by Atlanta but they just couldn't finish the job and capture their first playoff birth in franchise history.

The Outlaws would find a way to go on a 10-1 run from the end of the second through the third quarter. That would be the run that they needed to help take the lead and secure the victory and earn a playoff birth. Denver's offense by Eric Law who fueled the comeback with five goals on the day. Drew Snider and Zach Currier would also have two goals a piece.

Atlanta finishes the season with a franchise bet 7-7 record. Denver will be in the 2018 MLL playoffs as they punched their ticket with this win.
