Big Second Half Propels USA to Victory over Iroquois

The Marquee game of the day lived up to it's hype for sure. Even though the Iroquois had just gotten into Israel Thursday afternoon it didn't seem to phase them at all. Both squads showcased their impressive skills sets on both sides of the field. This game also further solidified that these are two of the best teams in the world.

The Iroquois would come out red hot and really pushing the issue early in the first. Austin Staats, Tehoka Nanticoke, and Lyle Thompson would all score pretty quickly to make it 3-0 Iroquois. The USA would finally answer with three of their own as Matt Danowski, Jordan Wolf, and Rob Pannell tied things up. With it tied up at three all the Iroquois would answer as Lyle Thompson would score his second and Randy Staats would get his first of the night. That would make it 5-3 Iroquois at the end of the first.

After a clock malfunction John Haus would score for USA to cut the Iroquois lead to 5-4. That goal was in the second quarter but technically was in the first since there was an eight second delay between the referees clock and the field clock. That clock issues will need to be sorted out before there are more issues later on in this tournament, which no one wants to see.

Ryan Brown would score for the USA early in the second and that would be their last goal of the half. The Iroquois defense really stepped it up in the second quarter as they were able to limit the USA. The Iroquois would continue their scoring ways as Lyle Thompson would get his third and Randy Staats would get his second on the day. That would make it a 7-5 Iroquois lead at the half.

The third quarter would be all USA as they would score seven goals. Rob Pannell would start the second half off with two goals. Pannell would be followed by Tom Schreiber and Ryan Brown as it would be a 10-7 USA lead. Miles Thompson would answer for the Iroquois as he helped cut the lead to 10-8. Drew Snider and Tom Schreiber would finish the quarter to make it a 12-8 USA lead.

It really seemed like the Iroquois may have slowed down or gotten a little tired in the third. Their defense, especially in transition, was getting exploited a ton by the USA. Also, they were a little sloppy on a few clears which really hurt them. Their offense looked just as good as the first half, but they didn't have the possessions they wanted like they did in the previous two quarters.

More of the same would continue in the fourth quarter as USA would continue to roll to victory. Ryan Brown would get things started with his fourth goal of the game. Marcus Holman would follow to make it 14-8 USA. Tehoka Nanticoke would score the ninth and final goal for the Iroquois midway through the fourth. Matt Danowski, Marcus Holman, and Jordan Wolf would close out the scoring for the USA to help give them a 17-9 win.

It was a great game filled with great plays all around. The USA clearly showed their dominance, especially in the second half. The Iroquois looked like they slowed down in the second half and that is really what hurt them. Both of these teams will for sure be in top three or two when the World Championships are all said and done.

Team USA's next game will be Saturday against Australia and the Iroquois next game will be on Saturday against England.

Three Stars

⭐⭐⭐:  Rob Pannell (USA) - 3 goals and 4 assist

⭐⭐:  Ryan Brown (USA) - 4 goals

⭐:  Lyle Thompson (IRO) - 3 goals

Honorable Mention

In addition to our three stars I just had to give a shoutout to Tehoka Nanticoke. The Albany sophomore had 2 goals and 1 assist. He played really well and all while wearing a Box helmet due to his head being too big for a field helmet. He just continues to prove every time out how special of a player he is.
