Season Recap: UMBC

The UMBC Retrievers season was not the best, but  special one to say the least. This was the second season with Ryan Moran at the helm of this UMBC program. They saw some more success this year, but they still missed their conference tournament.

UMBC finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 5-8 while going 3-3 in conference. While this is not ideal, it is a step in the right direction. This was only their second season with Ryan Moran as the head coach. Building success takes time, especially at a place like UMBC where you aren't really considered a "blue blood", at least not anymore. UMBC is improving and I love the culture that Coach Moran has instilled in Catonsville, MD.

The Retrievers had a unbelievably good defense this year. They even nicknamed themselves the Killer Bees, and they did swarm all over the field. That defensive unit was one of the best in the country as they were able to stop teams like Albany. That was for sure their marquee win this year. According to Patrick McEwen, aka Lax Film Room, the Retrievers ranked #2 in Defensive efficiency.

On the offensive side of the ball the Retrievers weren't as good as they would have liked to be. They had 89 goals and 41 assist on the year. I am sure that those are some lower numbers than they would have liked to see. The Retrievers also did not have very good numbers in other areas such as Man-up offense. So, offense is really where they will need and want to improve.

What's Next?

The Retrievers will lose 7 seniors off of this years squad, but it isn't a huge loss. This team was very young this year as many younger guys contributed very heavily. This really gives UMBC room to improve and develop.
