SoCon Report : Week 9

Hero Sports

It was another exciting week of SoCon Lacrosse action as there were a lot of fun games. There were a ton of games that were really close and could have gone either way. I love those kinds of fun games that the SoCon seems to have so many of.
Also, we are starting to see who the contenders and pretenders are in the SoCon as each team has now played three conference games. It was an exciting and fun week none the less. Let's dive into the action!

Air Force

The Falcons started off the week getting demolished in Ithaca, NY by Cornell. They really just could not stop that electric Cornell offense. The final score of that one was 23-5 in Cornell's favor. So, not the start to the week that anyone wants, but they were able to turn it around on Saturday.
On Saturday the Falcons visited Bellarmine and got a 9-7 win. They may have gotten the win but they had to fight for it. The Knights and Falcons played a very close one the whole game. Bellarmine came out and lead 2-1 at the end of the first and then the Falcons were able to tie it up at 3 all right before half. The Falcons would have a great third quarter as they outscored the Knights 4-1 that quarter. The Falcons really were in control most of the fourth and even held off a late comeback to win the game by a score of 9-7. The leading scorer for the Falcons was attackman Matthew Schwartz who had five goals. The Falcons also had an edge in a number of areas including the faceoff and ground ball battles. Air Force will have another road game next week as they take on the Jacksonville Dolphins on Saturday.

Bellarmine

The Knights took a close loss at home against Air Force on Saturday. The Knights lead the Falcons 2-1 at the end of the first. When halftime rolled around the Knights had let the Falcons tie the game up at 3 a piece. The third quarter may be one that wants to be forgotten by that Bellarmine defense as they allowed 4 goals. That is really where the game was lost, in the third quarter. Bellarmine was clearly a step behind as the fourth quarter rolled around. They went on a little run late in the game but ended up turning the ball over a few more times than they may have liked. The Knights just couldn't get it done in the second half, yet again. Their leaders on Saturday were attackman Morgan Mackon and Brian Wall, as they each had 2 goals a piece. Ian Miller also had three assist and looked to be pretty good for the Knights. Defenseman Kevin Fahey and Josh Wehn really were the hustle boys as they gobbled up two GB's each and were both very aggressive. The Knights next contest will come on the road at Richmond next week on Saturday.

Furman

The Paladins had a very nice comeback win over Mercer on the road in Macon, GA. Furman let Mercer come out pretty hot as the first quarter ended with Mercer up 3-1. The second quarter wasn't very much diffrent as the score at the half was 5-2 in favor of Mercer. The Paladins really got hot in the second half as they outscored the Bears 2-1 in the third and 3-0 in the fourth. The Paladins really looked like a very different team in the second half. They seemed to have more energy on both sides of the ball and it lasted the whole half. In the last 10 minutes of the game is where Furman really took they game as they cored 3 straight goals, What a great win for the Paladins. Some guys that were really good for them were midfielder David Williamson and Jonah Moore. Williamson had two goals and one assist, as Moore had two goals and three assist. Furman really owned the cleaing game, but really struggled at the faceoff dot and with ground balls. The Paladins next game will be a home one against High Point on Saturday. That will be a great game.

High Point

The High Point Panthers were able to get a big home victory over Jacksonville on Saturday. They came out very hot on the offensive side of the ball and put the Panthers up early. At the end of the first it was  close one at 4-3. The second quarter was big for the Panthers offense as they ended the first half leading 8-5. In the second half both teams seemed to look a little more even, but High Point always seemed to have an edge. The Panthers really just played a great game and that got them an 11-9 win over Jacksonville. Freshman midfielder Koby Russell lead the way in the scoring column for the Panthers with a season high of  three goals. The Goalie play by Tim Troutner was good again. The Junior had 16 saves as well as a assist. The Panthers next contest will be on the road against Furman on Saturday.

Final Game Stats

Jacksonville

The Dolphins took a tough loss at High Point on Saturday. They started off the game really slow as they didn't get much done in the until the end of the first quarter. Jacksonville's defense just couldn't stop High Point's offense at all. The second quarter wasn't much different for the Dolphins as they continued to be a step behind in both sides of the ball. At the half the Dolphins saw themselves trailing 8-5. The second half saw more even play from both squads. The Dolphins had two goals in the third and fourth quarter. Despite the late run Jacksonville just could not top High Point. Jacksonville was lead midfielder Gavin Dembeck and attakman Shawn Ewert with two goals a piece. Star studded Eric Applegate had a stellar four assist in tis game as well. Jacksonville seemed to have it together on the offensive end, but just couldn't get it done on the same level on the defensive end. That ultimately lead to the Dolphins 11-9 defeat. Jacksonville's next game will be at home against Air Force on Saturday.

Final Game Stats

Mercer

The Mercer Bears took a very tough loss to Furman at home on Saturday. The Bears were in control for most of the first half, as they came out red hot! The Bears went up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter as they were just firing on all cylinders. The Bears were just as prolific in the second quarter as they ended up leading 5-2 at the end of the first half. The Second half is where the Bears defense started to slack off a little bit. They let Furman come out of the second half with a lot of energy and allowed two goals. The third quarter ended with the score being 6-4 in Mercer's favor. The third was actually a pretty slow quarter until the end. The fourth quarter is really where the Bears let the Paladins really get ahead. Mercer did absolutely nothing on offense in the fourth quarter, but they allowed Fuman to score three goals. The Bears simply looked tired on D and basically was out run by the Paladins. That is just one ting that comes with having a young team. The final was 7-6 with Furman getting the win. Attackman Brian Gibson played well for the Bears as he had two goals. You can really see that turnovers hurt the Bears, as well as failing to clear the ball. The Mercer Bears next contest will be at home against VMI on Saturday.

Richmond

Richmond was one of two SoCon teams that did not play a SoCon opponent this week. The Richmond Spiders traveled to Charlottesville, VA to take on Virginia. This game would be one that the Spiders were in for most of the game. They really did play well against the Hoos. Richmond played very well and hung in with Virginia for the entire game. The first half ended with the game tied at 6 a piece. We saw the same kind of game in the third quarter as the game was still very close. The fourth is where the Spiders started to loose it. They let Virginia score 6 points to their 1 point in the fourth. The Spiders played very well but just couldn't hang in for the win. Some guys that really played well for Richmond were attackman Teddy Hatfield and Ryan Lee. Hatfield had one goal and two assist, ad Lee had two goals. Richmond was also perfect on extra-man opportunities as they went 3-3. The Spiders next contest will be against Bellarmine at home on Saturday.

VMI

The Keydets got an 18-3 win over Hampton on Saturday. This game was probably VMI's easiest game of the year as Hampton is only in their second year as a DI program and still transitioning. Needless to say we all very much respect and love Hampton and what they are doing for our sport. VMI was in control this entire game as they were up 12-1 at the half. The most goals that the VMI defense allowed Hampton to score was one. VMI really had guys that contributed all over the place, as they had four guys with four goals. The Keydets next contest will come on the road against Mercer on Saturday.
