Season Recap: Hampton

Photo Credit: Nelson Cheeseman / Hampton Athletics

The Hampton Pirates had a record setting year in their third season as a DI program. As the Pirates are still in transition mode from club to DI they played a number of DII, DIII, and JUCO programs along with some DI programs. They ended the 2018 season with a 5-8 record.
That is a record setting record for the Pirates as it is the most wins that they have ever had. That's a really great feat for Hampton to improve from 0-5 in 2016, 1-7 in 2017, and now 5-8 in 2018. That is some really good improvement.

Some areas of the game where the Pirates looked their best was in the clearing game, at the faceoff dot, and getting ground balls. Hampton went 243-293 on clears and141-183 at the faceoff dot. The Pirates were also able to scoop up 501 ground balls. Hampton did have areas in which they would have liked to perform better. Some of those areas are shooting and man-up offense. The Pirates shooting percentage on the year was .239. Their man-up offense only converted 15-48 man-up opportunities. Those are just a few areas where Hampton can look to improve for next season.

Whats Next?

Considering that Hampton is one of the newest programs I would say that the future could be very bright for this program. Like anything it will take time, but we have already seen progress be made and that is great. The good news for the Pirates is that they don't lose much off this this years squad at all. They have a lot of younger guys that they can help build this program more each year.
