What’s next for Michigan Lacrosse?

On Wednesday afternoon the Michigan men’s lacrosse team got their biggest win in program history.
The unrnaked Wolverines knocked off the number 4 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Even better for the Michigan program, this win came in the road at Arlotta Stadium. Arlotta is one of the hardest places to win in the country. This win was a statement for the Wolverines and now is their biggest win in program history. Also, it was the first time that Michigan had ever knocked off a top 5 team.

This years Michigan squad is lead by Senior Brent Noseworthy. The Burlington, Ontario native has 27 goals and 5 assist, adding up to 32 points so far. he has been their leader on offense and really is THE GUY for them this season. He really has been great every game and you can tell he carries this team. I love the way the guy plays and the energy he brings. He had 5 goals and 1 assist in that historic win against Notre Dame.

Michigan Lacrosse went DI back in 2012 it was huge because they are a power 5 school. The power 5 is the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and PAC 12. Michigan is still the latest school to have DI men's lacrosse from a power 5 conference. Utah will be next as they start play in 2019. This was huge for the lacrosse world. Before going Varsity, Michigan was a dominant power at the club level, playing in the MCLA.

When going DI, the school chose to just bring up the club coach, John Paul. Coach Paul was with the program until last season when he was fired. Under Coach Paul the Michigan program saw much growth. They went from club to DI, and had started construction of a lacrosse only facility that just opened this year. John Paul did a lot for the program and for his Alma mater, Michigan. They really just weren't producing the results that they wished and hoped for. It seemed as Marquette had passed Michigan for the premiere program in the upper Midwest, that has changed this year as Michigan beat Marquette earlier in the season.

Last year Kevin Conry was the defensive coordinator for Maryland. He helped take them to four straight championship weekends, that is crazy. Kevin Conry is now the head coach at Michigan this year and he is doing great. Michigan currently has a record of 6-2, there only losses are Penn and Yale. Even the games they lost they could have won. Kevin Conry has a young team and he has really turned the program around.

I am not saying that Michigan can win the Big Ten in Conry's first year as a head coach. I am not even saying that they will beat Maryland, but I think they can win a few Big Ten games. In the past Michigan has come very close but failed to close out the game. While Notre Dame is not in the Big Ten, they have the same kind of talent. I really think that Michigan can finally win a Big Ten game this year, as they have yet to win a Big Ten game.

What game Big ten opponents can they get a win against this year? I feel that they can beat Penn State for sure and they may be able to beat Rutgers or Ohio State. Those three teams are playing ok but not great at the moment. If Michigan can get a win over one of those teams then that would be huge for Michigan, the Big Ten, and the sport of lacrosse in general.

After this season Michigan should have a lot of confidence and should be able to recruit very well. They have a coach that has been at one of the blue bloods, so he knows the ropes. I'm not saying Paul was bad, but Conry is just more experienced at the DI level. The man's got himself a ring, so he had to do something right. This Notre Dame is just one of the many pieces to this project. This program can be and will be in the National Championship one day. I don't know when that day will be, but it will come.

What do you think is next for Michigan lacrosse?

Highlights of Notre Dame vs Michigan

  1. Great Content! I think Michigan has the potential of being a national power year in and year out. They just need a few years to recruit and get Conry's guys in there. I can see a B1G championship for them as soon as 5 years.
