SoCon Report: Week 8

Mercer Athletics

Another crazy week of college lacrosse action in the SoCon. We had some great conference games this week that were very exciting.
As we get deeper into SoCon play we will start to see who the real contenders and pretenders are. But, as you all know the SoCon is a crazy conference and anything can happen.

Air Force (3-6) (1-1)

The Falcons had a tough week as they took a close loss to Mercer. The Falcons lost 9-7 to the Bears of Mercer. This is a game that looked to be a cake walk for Air Force at the beginning of the year but obviously things have not been going there way thus far. The Falcons will have an two opportunities to redeem themselves next week as they play at Cornell on Tuesday and at Bellarmine on Saturday.

Bellarmine (2-6) (0-2)

The Bellarmine Knights took on Jacksonville on the road on Saturday. These two teams would come out with a defensive battle as it was 1-0 Dolphins at the end of the 1st Q and 2-1 at the end of the half. The Knights looked very slow and poor in the second half as the Dolphins were able to pull aways. The Knights lost 9-5. They will have a date with Air Force at home on Saturday.

Furman (2-6) (2-0)

The Paladins got an 11-7 win over VMI on Saturday. Furman is really starting to show how good they can be in SoCon play. Their next competition will be against Mercer on Saturday on the road. That should be a great game as both teams are starting to come into their own.

High Point (1-7) (1-1)

The High Point Panthers took a loss to Richmond on Saturday. High Point was pretty much behind the whole game and could never get back into the lead. I really like where High Point is heading and think they can make some big noise in the SoCon as we get further into conference play.

Jacksonville (3-4) (1-0)

The Dolphins got a win over Bellarmine at home on Saturday. They were in a defensive battle in the first half before going on a run in which they never looked back in the second half. They got a 9-5 win over Bellarmine and will look to get another win next week at High Point.

Mercer (3-6) (1-1)

The Mercer Bears looked really good again and got a 9-7 win over Air Force on the road. The Bears are really figuring out how to play and are playing well. Their next test will be against Furman next Saturday at home.

Richmond (5-4) (2-1)

The Spiders got a a 15-12 win over High Point on Saturday. The Spiders have been getting better each week as they still figure out this new core. Richmond obviously looked good on Saturday and got the win. Their next game will be against Virginia on Saturday. That one should be a real test as they try to knock off their second ACC opponent this year.

VMI (1-6) (0-3)

The Keydets played took a loss 11-7 loss to Furman at home on Saturday. The Keydets obviously don't have the most talented squad in the SoCon, but they have improved each week. Their next contest will be an out of conference matchup against Hampton on Saturday.
