SoCon Report: Week 6

Another crazy week of college lacrosse action that included
a SoCon team getting a huge upset in the grand landscape of DI. Also, two teams started SoCon play and a few teams had bye weeks. Let's dig in.

Air Force (2-6)

The Falcons played two games last week, Michigan on Friday and Detroit Mercy on Sunday.  The Falcons lost their game against Michigan on Friday by  score of 14-9. I was not able to watch this game, but I do know that Michigan is just an overall better team this season. On Sunday the Falcons were able to get a 9-7 win over Detroit Mercy. This game was on ESPN 3 and I did watch it. Air Force looked the best I have seen all year. They were playing good on both sides of the ball the entire game. I have seen a ton of improvement in Air Force and this was their best game yet. Their next contest will be home against VMI on Saturday to open SoCon play.

Bellarmine (2-4)

The Bellarmine Knights had a week off after that great win over Marquette that capped off the Midwest Lacrosse Classic. The Knights next opponent will come on Saturday against High Point on the road to start SoCon play.

Furman (0-6)

The Paladins welcomed Penn State to Grenville, SC on Tuesday. Furman has had good touts with the Nittany Lions in the past, but Tuesday was a different story. Furman lost 16-5 as they could not handle that Penn State offense. I really though Furman showed some light, but Penn State was just a lot better. The Paladins next contest will be on the road at Richmond to open up SoCon play.

High Point (0-6)

The High Point Panthers had a bye week after taking an 11-16 loss at Robert Morris two Saturdays ago now. The Panthers next game will be at home on Saturday against Bellarmine to open SoCon play. They should be able to finally get a win there. As I have heard people say, High Point is the best 0-6 team out there.

Jacksonville (2-4)

The Dolphins had a week off after that OT thriller where they almost knocked off Ohio State. Their Head Coach, John Galloway, was honored at halftime of the Syracuse vs Hopkins game. They honored the 2008 National Championship team that he was on as well as the 1988 team. Very cool thing for Coach Galloway. The Dolphins will open SoCon play with a home game against Mercer on Saturday.

Mercer (2-4)

THE MERCER BEARS!!!! Mercer had a great week as they maybe had the biggest upset of the week. On Tuesday night Mercer traveled to Newark, DE to take on Delaware. The Bears pulled off a tremendous upset, beating Delaware 10-8. What a great win for the Bears. However, their week ended in defeat as they lost on the road against Mount St. Mary's 12-9. The Bears will open SoCon play on the road at Jacksonville on Saturday.

Richmond (3-4) (1-0)

The Spiders started SoCon play on Saturday with a win over VMI. The Spiders defeated the Keydets 18-12. It looks as if their offense played well, but they still need to improve their defense, in my opinion. The Spiders will play at home on Wednesday against North Carolina and on the road against Furman on Saturday.

VMI (1-4) (0-1)

The Keydets played two home games last week. They played Wagner on Tuesday and Richmond on Saturday. The Keydets lost to Wagner 9-8 and then to Richmond 18-12. It seems as if the Keydets offense had improved very much, but their defense still needs some work. VMI's next contest will be on the road at Air Force on Saturday. That will mark their second SoCon game.
