Midweek Notebook, Upsets Galore

Mercer Athletics

It's only Wednesday and we have had a whole host of great games this week.
Monday we saw a great North Carolina vs Denver game, Tuesday we saw some big upsets, and Wednesday we had a great battle between Vermont and Sacred Heart. This week has already blessed us with some great lacrosse. I can't even wait to see what the weekend holds.

Game Recaps

Monday

      North Carolina 6  Denver 10
This game was a great one. I really thought that this game could have gone either way, but Denver just got the upper hand. The Tar Heels played a lot better considering they had only one day of rest after an OT win against St. John's. Denver really showed how good of a team they are and what the offense has. We all know that the Faceoff X was going to me a point of emphasis during this game because of Denver's Trevor Baptiste. North Carolina actually went against him very well. Charles Kelly has had the best performance against Baptiste in my mind. I really think Denver is just a better team here.

Tuesday

      Saint Joseph's 7 St. John's 12
The Red Storm traveled down to Philly to take on Saint Joseph's. This was a really good game as it was close pretty much the whole way until St. John's took control in the 4th quarter. I was very impressed with how well Saint Joseph's played and handled St. John's. Despite the effort of the Hawks, the Johnnies were able to get a good win and survive in Philly, which has become very difficult as of late.

      UMass 8 Albany 19
The Dane train was able to roll straight through Amherst on Tuesday night. Albany was able to pretty much do whatever they wanted to as they just controlled the whole time. Tehoka Nanticoke and Conner Field were once again dominant. The Dane Train keeps rolling.

      Fairfield 9 Quinnipiac 6
The Stags were able to edge the Bobcats at home on Tuesday after a dominant first half. Despite Quinnipiac's second half comeback Fairfield was able to hold on and get the win.

      Georgetown 13 Marist 6
The Hoyas were able to continue their winning ways as they got a home win against Marist on Tuesday. The Hoyas were simply the better team here as they lead the whole game. The Red Foxes are just not on the same level as the Hoyas.

      VMI 8 Wagner 9
The Seahawks were able to get a win over VMI on Tuesday night. These two teams are usually on the bottom half of DI. Both teams are pretty equal in terms of talent, but Wagner had the edge this time around.

      Hobart 12 Colgate 11
This game was one of the more surprising games of Tuesday. The Hobart Statesman were able to upset Colgate at home. The Colgate Raiders have been very good this season on the both ends of the field. This game was just a surprise to me as Hobart has not been that impressive in 2018, but they got the upset!

      Villanova 9 Brown 12
Brown traveled south to Philly and came up with the upset. Villanova was up early in this game and it looked like they were going to cruise, but Brown stopped that. The Brown Bears were able to comeback and use their fast-paced offense to power their way to victory. This was one of the most surprising games this week as most had counted Brown out. The Bears showed that they are still in this thing as they got the upset win.

      Providence 11 UMass Lowell 12
UMass Lowell!!! The River Hawks came out of the gate hot and they stayed that way for the better part of the game. UMass Lowell's offense was just insane in the first half and that ultimately lead them to victory as they upset Providence. The Friar's started to comeback in the second half but couldn't prevent the upset. I should also add that UMass Lowell is only in their 4th year as a program. Great win for those guys, especially the seniors.

      Delaware 8 Mercer 10
This was the biggest upset of the week!!! The Mercer Bears come into Newark,DE and took down the Blue Hens. I know that nobody saw this coming. Delaware had been very good and Mercer is a young team that had been struggling. This is a huge win for the Mercer as a program. Also, There was a #SCTop10 play in this game.

      Cornell 18 Binghamton 2
The Cornell Big Red were able to take down Binghamton by a huge margin. Cornell really just shoved it down Binghamton's throat.

      Princeton 15 NJIT 8
Princeton was able to get a win against in-state foe NJIT. The Tigers really just stepped on the pedal and never took their foot off. Also, NJIT just isn't up to the level of Princeton as they are a newer program.

      Penn State 16 Furman 5
The Nittany Lions were able to handle Furman pretty well on Tuesday night. This game has been pretty close in the past, but this year was different. Penn State is just a much more talented team this year.

      Navy 3 Penn 11
The Penn Quakers went south to Annapolis,MD and pounded Navy. The Quakers are really starting to prove week in and week out how good they are, and can be. Penn just really played great again.

      Manhattan 5 Virginia 8
The Jasper's gave Virginia a scare there for a minute but UVA was able to prevail. Virginia really just didn't look right in the first half but then picked up the pace near the end of the game to put them over Manhattan and get the road win. Virginia was missing a few guys due to injury and suspension.

 Wednesday

      Vermont 17 Sacred Heart 14
The Catamounts were able to get a win against a very tough Sacred Heart team to stay undefeated. Sacred Heart played very hard but just couldn't outlast Vermont. Both these teams are great teams and Vermont just had the upper hand today.
