Midweek Notebook: Upsets and Hampton's Gets Second Win

Cleveland State Lacrosse

What a crazy week we have already had.
We have had games moved back and canceled due to winter storm Skylar and we have had upsets. Man, has it been an eventful week in the landscape of college lacrosse, and we aren't even to the weekend yet.

Game Recaps

Siena vs Bryant - Cancelled due to weather. Makeup date TBA

 Saint Joseph's vs Drexel

Saint Joseph's, SJU, defeated Drexel 10-9. Drexel really controlled the first half as they lead 6-3. SJU really came out firing out of the gates to start the second half. They scored five unanswered in the 3rd quarter before Drexel caught back up. SJU took over again in the 4th quarter as they went on another roll. The Hawks really just had more runs than the Dragons, and that is what won them the game. This was a great game as both teams were pretty evenly matched. I would say that SJU had an upper hand on the offensive end, but not by much.

Cleveland State vs Lafayette

The Cleveland State Vikings pulled off an upset win of the Leopards of Lafayette. Cleveland State, a 2nd year program, defeated a pretty decent Lafayette team on Tuesday night. The Leopards have a pretty good defense, but other than that I have yet to see much. Cleveland State is still a very young and ambitious team. I love the way they play and on Tuesday it got them a 12-6 win over Lafayette. What a great program win for the Vikings as that is their third win over a DI program. They beat Detroit Mercy last season and this season they have beaten Air Force and now Lafayette.

Johns Hopkins vs UMBC
I was able to catch the last 10 minutes of this game and what I saw was an offensive clinic from Hopkins. UMBC was competitive but not enough to take down the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins took this one by a score of 13-6. According to what the announcers, Mark Dixon and the Legendary Coach Don Zimmerman, were saying it was pretty even until Hopkins was able to pull away. I really do think this is a good UMBC team, but they are still very young. I would look out in the American east for these guys. Hopkins showed how powerful they can be and that is always good for any team. Today Hopkins was just the better team. I'm glad it wasn't a complete blowout like in recent years.

UMass Lowell vs UMass

The Minutemen of UMass were able to get a 13-6 win over UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon. Neither of these teams have had the best success thus far in the season, but they have been getting better. UMass Lowell was able to upset Providence last week, so they were confident. UMass has been down this year and they were looking for another win. UMass really was the better team and had the upper hand.

Hofstra vs Monmouth

The Hofstra pride now have three wins in a row as they best Monmouth 7-6 on Wednesday. The Pride have been really good these past two weeks and they just proved that again. Monmouth is another team that has been really good this season. They were able to hang with the Pride, but couldn't get the job done. This was a great game and really probably could have gone either way.

Richmond vs North Carolina

The Spiders!!!! Richmond got a great upset win over North Carolina on Wednesday night. The final of that game was 11-10. This is a huge win for Richmond and will really gibe them a lot of energy heading into the meat of SoCon play. Honestly, I am not surprised by this upset at all. North Carolina is a good team, but has yet to impress me that much. I know they are in the ACC and have a good offense, but that Defense is just awful. They really need to step it up on the defensive end of the ball if they want to get back on track.

Lehigh vs Rutgers

There was a ton of hype surrounding this game and it certainly lived up to that. Rutgers traveled to Bethlehem, PA and got an 8-7 win over Lehigh. This is a good bounce back win for the Scarlet Knights after losing to in-state rival Princeton on Saturday. Lehigh, really did put up a great fight and I thought they could have won this game. Both teams played great and made it a great game to watch. I really like both of these teams a lot. Rutgers may have a little more to prove just because they have been a little slumped in the beginning of the year. Lehigh has been surprising good. Rutgers just had the upper hand today and Lehigh didn't.

Hampton vs Bethany (DIII)

The Hampton Pirates welcomed in Bethany, a DIII school, to Hampton, VA for what would be a win for Hampton. The Pirates defeated Bethany by a score of 15-5. That win earned them their second win of the season. The Pirated will play their first DI opponent of the season next Tuesday as they travel to Wagner on Staten Island. Big Congrats to the Pirates on a great win!
