Mega Post: How Every Team Looks One Moth In

Brown University Athletics

I can't believe that we are already one month through the 2018 College Lacrosse season. That is just crazy because I feel like we were just sitting around waiting for the season to start yesterday. Now we are already one moth in.
I want to use this post to look at each team and how they have upped their stock or decreased their stock. Each team has had a different experience through the first month of the season and we really need to take a look at that from each team individually.

Air Force (1-3)

Air Force has really been down this year. They had all that investigation and scandal in the fall that really wrecked this team. They currently have an interim head coach while Eric Seremet is still being investigated. The Falcons started the season against Duke and got crushed. They improved the next week against Denver but that was a tough one because of all the snow they played in. Air Force finally got their first win against Marist on the road and that gave them some confidence and momentum for sure. The Falcons had an awful loss last week when they lost to 2nd year program Cleveland State. That was a game that they should have won. The Falcons obviously are having a very odd and unusual season. I think they can get some good wins once SoCon play starts up in March.

Albany (2-0)

WOW! The Dane Train is back and rolling into 2018 with a full tank. The Albany Great Danes have been nothing short of fantastic. This is a team that has only played two games but they have steamrolled both their opponents. Albany started their season off in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse and downed the Orange. Albany came out and delivered big time. Freshman Tehoka Nanticoke looked like a man out there and he still does. In their 2nd game they took on Drexel at home. This game was an offensive clinic for the Danes. They played great and never took their foot off the pedal. The Dane Train is rolling right on into March with a number one ranking.

Army (3-1)

The Black Knights have been very good in February. Their defense is their staple this year and they really show it. Every time I see Army play I am just in awe with how good that D is. Army has played four games which included contest against UMass, NJIT, Rutgers, and Syracuse. That is a pretty good February slate. They were able to handle UMass pretty good and really showed their offense in that game as well as their D. Against NJIT the Black Knights were just the better team by far. They really dominated the whole game. Rutgers was a tough game as it was their first ranked opponent but the Black Knights were able to handle them even though it was close. The Black Knights closed out February by going to the Dome and taking Syracuse to 3OT's. This was maybe the best game of the year. Army showed who they were early and then coming out of half Syracuse was able to figure out the Black Knights and then it was all D in the overtime periods. Army ended up losing but I still really liked the way they were playing.

Bellarmine (1-3)

The Bellarmine Knights are a very young team that has grown very much in the month of February. The Knights had games against Robert Morris, Michigan, Cleveland State, and Manhattan. The Knights only win came against Cleveland State. Although they only have one win and are very young, 22 freshman, they have grown. I live right near Bellarmine so I get to see them play a lot and man have they gotten better at just everything. Their chemistry on the field, speed, stick skills, and just IQ have improved very much since that first game against Robert Morris.

Binghamton (0-4)

Most people knew that this would be a more difficult year for the Bearcats then last year but we didn't know it would be this tough. The Bearcats are still looking for their first win of the season. They had to open the season against Syracuse in the Dome, where they got crushed. They then traveled to Colgate midweek and got lit up again. Their game against Canisius was better and they showed how they can be good when they can keep possession but then the Griffs came back and won. They played a tight game against Marist that really proved they are capable of a lot of things. This Binghamton team has a lot of growing to do and the wins will start coming.

Boston U. (3-2)

The Terriers have gotten off to a pretty good start. People knew coming in that this was going to be a bot of a down year but not too much. They have started to prove otherwise. Starting off the season with an overtime victory against Providence at home was a great momentum building win for them. They then lost to Ohio State as expected, but they did play well. They devoured Dartmouth like everyone else and then lost to good Navy team to open Patriot League play. They beat Bryant to close out February and I think they will be just fine heading into March.

Brown (1-1)

No Dylan Molloy and a second year head coach most people kind of knew Brown would struggle early. I think they are still a great team but when you open the season with a loss to Quinnipiac that doesn't look good at all. The Bears beat Stony Brook and showed how good that offense can be. I think they need to stay on the right track and they will be good throughout March and especially in the Ivy League.

Bryant (2-3)

The Bulldogs have been one of the elites in the NEC for a while now. They have a really good team and I think they will be competing for a NEC championship if all goes right. The Bulldogs opened the season with a win over Manhattan and then dropped a shootout with Bucknell. Bryant then lost to a very tough Providence team and then beat inter-state foe Hartford pretty good. I really like what Iv'r seen from Bryant so far. Even though they leave February with a loss to Boston U. I think the Bulldogs are just getting started.

Bucknell (3-1)

Bucknell has been a surprise team this year. That offense is very very good and I love watching it. I think Bucknell was a little underrated coming into the season and they are showing that to the whole country. Bucknell started off their season with a win over Marist in which it was basically a shootout. They then beat Bryant in another high scoring game and then followed that up with their lone loss against Richmond. That Richmond game showed how they can be stopped but they bounced back with a win over a top 20 Colgate team who was on fire. The Bison have had a successful February and I really like watching them play. They should be getting even better as we head into March.

Canisius (2-1)

With a new head coach the Griffs have been pretty successful. They have beaten some pretty good teams and I think the most impressive part is how they have bounced back in games and after a bad loss. The Griffs started their season off with a loss to Dartmouth. That was a game they should have won for sure. They then beat Binghamton in a comeback win and then beat Furman in overtime. The Griffs can play and they have showed that for sure in this first month of the season.

Cleveland State (1-5)

The Vikings are just in their second year of play at the DI level. I really do like the growth that I have seen from them though. They hung with Ohio State in their opener which was surprising. After Ohio State they have played Michigan, Mercer, Bellarmine, Air Force, and Denver. They played each game very close and even beat Air Force. I have been really glad to see their progress.

Colgate (3-1)

Colgate has been another surprise team from the Patriot League. They have a great offense and D as well. I also love how they ride and how they clear the ball. I think this is a Colgate team that will earn a ton of respect as the season progresses. They have beaten Marist, Binghamton, and Cornell. Their lone loss was against Bucknell who is also a surprise team. I really like what I see from Colgate so far and hope to see more of the same as we head into March.

Cornell (1-1)

The Big Red have an interim head coach but they also have Jeff Teat. He is one of the best attackman in the Ivy League but I do think he is a little overrated. He is still a good player through. The Big Red dropped their first game to Colgate and then they took it to Hobart. They have shown what they can do on the offensive side of the ball and I like it. I know they will get better as they start to play more games.

Dartmouth (1-2)

The Big Green continue to struggle this season as usual. Dartmouth needs to get a statement win to get this program back on track. They have been down foe so long. They started 2018 with a win over Canisius but then lost to Boston U. pretty big and then Sacred Heart big as well. They actually came back late against Sacred Heart but they still didn't look good. They really need to figure out how to get a signature win as we move into March.

Delaware (3-0)

The Blue Hens are rolling! New head coach Ben DeLuca has them playing great lacrosse right now. They have beaten Mount St. Mary's, NJIT, and Monmouth so far. Those may not be signature wins but they sure are playing signature lacrosse. I really can't wait to see more of the Blue Hens in March.

Denver (2-1)

The Pioneers have been very good as usual. Trevor Baptieste has been a beast at the Faceoff dot. He won 100% of Faceoffs he took against Cleveland State. The Pios have more then just him though. They have talent everywhere. The Pioneers have beaten Air Force and Cleveland State pretty easily but then they did let Duke come back on them in their 2nd week of the season. They just need to keep building and not give up any big leads like they did at Duke. The Pios are coming into March very strong!

Detroit Mercy (1-3)

Detroit Mercy started out strong but then kind of dipped in recent weeks. Their first game was against Notre Dame and they really did play them well. Next they had Mercer and  got their first win of the year. They then closed out February with losses to Jacksonville and Marquette. The Titans need to get back to playing with much energy and poise as they did against Notre Dame.

Drexel (0-3)

Drexel has had a tough February. The Dragons had to play Virginia, Albany, and Villanova. That is one heck of a three game stretch. The Dragons have not been able to matchup with any of these teams very well. They did show some light against Villanova and that is great for them. If they can play like that going forward they can be very successful.

Duke (4-1)

The preseason number one team has been very impressive in the first month of the season but they are no longer number one. The Blue Devils have beaten Air Force, High Point, Jacksonville, and Denver. They played outstanding in all these games and really looked good. However, Penn was able to upset the Blue Devils just last week and that hurt them in the Rankings. Duke is still a great team and will continue to be successful in March.

Fairfield (1-3)

The Stags have not been up to par what most thought coming into the season. Fairfield opened their season with a loss to a tough Vermont team and then won against Saint Joseph's. They ended up losing their last two February games to Rutgers and Hartford. I really think Fairfield has the talent and know how that they will do good in conference but until then they need to get some good wins and they can.

Furman (0-4)

Man had Furman struggled and been snubbed in February. They have come so close to winning but just couldn't grasp the W. The Paladins played Vermont, North Carolina, Sacred Heart, and Canisius. They have been able to play pretty well but just can't seem to get a win. They took North Carolina to overtime and that was a great game. I know Furman can play as they have a good offense and defense. They just need to get a win.

Georgetown (4-0)

Georgetown has been great in February this year. I know that they have struggled in recent year but this just might be the year they climb back to the top. Georgetown has been a great team so far. They have beaten some good quality opponents and they have shown that they can get out of trouble when they are down or playing a close game. I'm really liking the Hoyas this year.

Hampton (0-2)

The Pirates are in their second year as a DI program. They are still transitioning so they still don't play a full DI schedule yet. They have played two games that include DIII opponents such as Lincoln Memorial and University of D.C. Hampton is still improving so I think we will see them start to improve as the season goes on. I really want this program to be successful.

Hartford (1-2)

Hartford really wants to get back to the success they had in 2016. They haven't been able to reestablish that success this season yet. They have lost to St. John's and Bryant but they did get a win over Fairfield. Also, all their games have been pretty close so that is a really good sign for the Hawks. They have shown they can play and now they just need to do that more heading into March.

Harvard (2-1)

The Crimson have had a pretty good first month of the season. They have beaten UMass Lowell, lost to Holy Cross, and beat UMass. Harvard I feel can do more than they have but they will progress for sure. The Holy Cross upset is the only black eye they have so far but they need to avoid those. Harvard just needs to continue to improve as we head into March.

High Point (0-5)

The Panthers have not had a great February as they still look for that first win. High Point is capable of winning but they just played some very tough competition in February. The Panthers had to matchup against Duke, Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia, and St. John's. HPU played very well against Maryland and Virginia. I really feel that High Point can play very well and will be very competitive once SoCon play.

Hobart (0-3)

The Statesman have struggled in the early part of the season. They have lost to Penn State, Siena, and Cornell. Hobart really needs to find a bright spot that they can lean on to get some wins. They really need to get their groove together and get wins as we head into March.

Hofstra (1-2)

The Pride have not had too much success in February. They really need to get their entire team working together more. They have a good offense but that defense needs to improve. Hofstra has taken losses to Ohio State and Villanova while beating Stony Brook. They played very well against Ohio State but just folded against Villanova, and that game was at home. I really don't understand Hofstra this year but they need to figure something out and fast.

Holy Cross (1-3)

Holy Cross has been bad at time and then they have beens good at times. They were able to upset Harvard which was good for them but they have lost to Providence, Vermont, and Lehigh. Holy Cross has been playing pretty slow at times and they need to fix that. They really need to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Jacksonville (2-3)

The Dolphins have been great thus far. I really like watching Jacksonville play. They started out with a great win over Navy but then lost to Duke and Marquette. They ended February with a handling of Detroit Mercy and with an overtime loss to Ohio State. Jacksonville needs to keep doing what they do best and they could really be great.

Johns Hopkins (1-2)

It's panic time in Baltimore. The Blue Jays dominated Towson in their opener but then lost to Loyola and North Carolina. Hopkins has made a bunch of mistakes on the field that have lead into their losses. They need to clean things up a whole lot so they can get back to the level that their talent is.

Lafayette (2-3)

The Leopards have had a pretty good season thus far. I really do think that this is the best Lafayette team I have seen in a while. They played North Carolina well but lost and they have gotten two wins over NJIT and Wagner. To end February they lost to Manhattan and Loyola. Lafayette needs to keep pushing and play like they know how.

Lehigh (3-1)

The Mountain Hawks have beaten NJIT, Mercer, and Holy Cross. Their lone loss is against North Carolina. Lehigh has done what they have needed to in February. They beat all the teams they were supposed to and that's pretty good. I think Lehigh should have a little bit of trouble in the Patriot League, but if they play the right way they can have success as we move into March.

Loyola (4-1)

Loyola looks like they are the cream of the crop in the Patriot League again. They have had a very good February. Their offense lead by Pat Spencer looks really good. They have only lost to Virginia in double overtime. They downed Johns Hopkins and Lafayette. Loyola looks to be in really good shape heading into March.

Manhattan (3-2)

The Jaspers are above the .500 mark for the first time since 2009. Manhattan has beaten VMI, Lafayette, and Bellarmine after losing their first two games to Bryant and Wagner. I think the Jaspers are staring to figure it out since they have won three straight now. They should be on a good track if they can continue into March.

Marist (1-4)

The Red Foxes really expected more than they have shown so far. They have lost to Bucknell, Colgate, Maryland, and Air Force. They got their first win against Binghamton. If you look at Marist they have seemed to consistently gotten better each week which is good.

Marquette (2-0)

Although the Golden Eagles have only played two games they look really good. They were able to get a win over Jacksonville and they man handled Detroit Mercy. I think Marquette will begin to prove even more people wrong as we move into March and they play more games.

Maryland (4-0)

The Terps are the defending champs and they have had a great start. They started the season as they downed Navy and Marist. They have struggled a little in their last two games against High Point and Penn but still got the win. I think Maryland will continue to get wins and improve as we move to the 2nd month of the season.

Mercer (1-3)

Mercer is a very yon team that really has struggled. The Bears only win was against Cleveland State in overtime. Mercer has grown each game but they still are very young. I think as we move past February we will see Mercer get better and grow into their own.

Michigan (2-2)

Kevin Conry is a first year head coach at Michigan so they have had some growing pains for sure. I really think that Michigan has done better than I expected. I really like they way the Wolverines are playing right now. They have beaten Cleveland State and Bellarmine and lost to Penn and Yale. The two games they lost they still played very good. They should be able to pick up some more energy as we enter March.

Monmouth (1-2)

The Hawks have gotten things off to a good start. Their first game they lost to Princeton in double overtime. They then went on to defeat Wagner and loose to Delaware. Monmouth has grown tremendously as a program as they won the MAAC last year in only their 4th year. This team has been growing each game and that should continue as month two of the season starts.

Mount St. Mary's (1-4)

The Mountaineers may only have one win but they have given a few teams a scare. They were able to upset UMBC to get their first win of the season but they have lost to Delaware, Towson, Richmond, and Georgetown. Despite the losses they played very well in those games. I think Mount St. Mary's could be powerful in the NEC. I'm looking to see if they can get some more wins in March.

Navy (2-2)

The Midshipmen haven't had the start that they wanted. They lost to Jacksonville in their first game of the season and then to Maryland. They have won two games in a row against UMBC and Boston U. Navy really needs to improve all over the place as they have the past few weeks.

NJIT (0-5)

The Highlanders have yet to win a game. So far they have gone up against Lehigh, Lafayette, Army, Delaware, and VMI. NJIT has played pretty good in some games and bad in others. They really just need to get a win as we enter the second month of the season.

North Carolina (5-0)

The Tar Heels have had a great start to the season. Their offense is really good but they could improve that D. They have gone head to head against Lafayette, Furman, Lehigh, Johns Hopkins, and Mercer. UNC should have continued success as we turn the page to March.

Notre Dame (2-0)

The Irish haven't played that many games but they have been able to win both. Notre Dame is a very powerful team with a bright future ahead as we flip to March. The only concerns I have is that they had a little difficulty in both of those games as they were both pretty close.

Ohio State (4-0)

The national runner-up's from 2017 have had a great start in 2018. They have played Cleveland State, Boston U., Hofstra, and Jacksonville so far this season. They have really played some great lacrosse. One game I want to point out is their game against Jacksonville. The Buckeyes started slow against Jacksonville but were able to come back and win in overtime. That really showed how they can comeback and get a win which is always important. I really like the energy of this Buckeye team right now and I know they still have much more room to grow and get better.

Penn (2-1)

A lot of people really like Penn this year. They have had a good amount of success through three games. They started off their season with a win over Michigan and then a loss to Maryland. Their biggest win was when they beat #1 Duke at home in Philly. There is just something special about underdogs from Philadelphia this year. Penn is looking good right now.

Penn State (2-2)

Penn State came into the season with high expectations and they have somewhat lived up to them through the 1st month. Injuries have been a big part of that. One of their main guys Grant Ament broke his foot and has been out. That is very tough on them. They have been able to get two wins over Hobart and Stony Brook after an opening loss to Villanova. The Nittany Lions ended February with a loss against Robert Morris. Penn State needs to get fully healthy and figure some things out. I really do think they are a great team but they need all the pieces.

Princeton (1-1)

The Tigers have only played two games and they split those two. Princeton survived a potential upset against Monmouth as they won that game in 2 OT to open the season. Princeton then traveled to Virginia where they lost a great game and a shootout with UVA. I really like Princeton's offense but they need to improve on the D and in the transition.

Providence (3-1)

The Friars have started off 2018 pretty well. They opened the season at Boston U. where they lost in overtime and then haven't lost since. They have beaten Holy Cross, Bryant, and Saint Joseph's. I really think this team is good and as they improve can and will give the Big East a scare. I really like their play all around.

Quinnipiac (1-2)

The Bobcats are a weird team this year. They upset Brown in week 2 but they have lost UMass Lowell and got creamed by Vermont. I expected the Vermont loss but not UMass Lowell. Quinnipiac just need to figure out how to be consistent and play like they did against Brown all the time.

Richmond (2-2)

The Spiders are in a transition year, so to speak. Last season they were a very defensive heavy team opposed to offensive heavy like this year. They are still figuring that out and improving each week. I know this team has firepower but they just need to figure out how to use it and unleash it properly. Richmond lost a close one to UMBC in their season opener and then won two straight against Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's. They ended February with a loss against Notre Dame. Richmond is looking to march forward for sure and get even better. They are the SoCon favorite at this time.

Robert Morris (2-2)

The Colonials have had a historic season thus far. Their season already has a huge highlight as they were able to beat Penn State. That was a huge program win for Robert Morris. They lost to Rutgers during week one but then defeated Bellarmine and lost by one to Georgetown. Robert Morris really is having a great season and they need that energy to carry over into March.

Rutgers (3-1)

Rutgers is maybe one of the most talented teams in the country. They really are a good team. They started off the season with wins over Robert Morris and St. John's. Then they lost to Army and beat Fairfield. If not for that Army loss I feel the Scarlet Knights would be a top 5 team. They have tons of talent and they really will rack up more wins in March.

Sacred Heart (3-1)

This is the best Sacred Heart team that I have seen in quite a while. I just love how they play the game. They have started the season pretty strong as well. They started off with a win over Stony Brook and then lost UMass. They ended February with two straight wins over Furman and Dartmouth. I really want to see how they do as we turn the page to March and get into conference play.

Saint Joseph's (0-2)

Saint Joseph's has yet to get a win in 2018. They have lost to Fairfield and Providence. Although, they have improved each game and I want to see what they can do as we progress in the season.

Siena (2-0)

The Saints ended last season with momentum and they have started this year with that same fire. The Saints have beaten Hobart and UMass Lowell. The Hobart game was a one goal victory and UMass Lowell was an overtime game. I have yet to see them play a full game but so far I have liked most of what I have seen. It will be interesting to see if that momentum can venture with them into March.

St. John's (2-1)

I have been very surprised with how well St. John's has been playing. I think they could potentially be a dangerous team come Big East play. St. John's only loss so far has been to a very good Rutger team. St. John's played very well that game and almost got the upset victory. They have beaten Hartford and High Point. This is a team to watch as we enter the second month of the season.

Stony Brook (0-4)

This is a very down year for the Seawolves. They have yet to win a game and hav been dominated a few times as well. They have taken losses against Sacred Heart, Penn State, Brown, and Hofstra. Those are all tough teams but the way Stony Brook has lost is just bad. They need to adjust their defense mostly and then learn to get the ball in the back of the cage better.

Syracuse (2-1)

This is an unusual Syracuse team as their really is no one leader. They do not have a number 22 either, that is usually "the guy" or "the leader". 22 is a very special number at Syracuse. The Orange dominated Binghamton in their first game but then got dominated by Albany. Army was able to devour the Orange in the first half but Syracuse came back and took the game to 3 OT and won. It's been a crazy month for the Orange and people already want to fire Desko. So, nothing has changed up there. I am just interested to see how Cuse does on the road as they haven't played a road game yet.

Towson (1-3)

This Towson team is really strange. They look like they can play with anyone at times but then there are times when they lay an egg. I'm not sure what they need but they need something. Towson returns al of their defense which was amazing last year but they aren't playing well. I really want to see if Towson can turn it around in March. They have only beaten Mount St. Mary's in their second game and they have been defeated by Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, and Loyola.

UMass (1-3)

The Minutemen have had some struggles so far this season. They got devoured by Army in their season opener but got a win over Sacred Heart in week 2. They closed out the month of February with two straight losses that came against Harvard and Yale. They actually played pretty good those last two games but still couldn't get the win. I like their offense a lot and think they can build off that. I really am anxious to see how UMass looks as we turn the page on February and into March.

UMass Lowell (1-2)

The River Hawks are in their 4th year as a program so they are still building. They have managed to get one win so fare and that came against Quinnipiac in their season opener. Since then they have  lost to Harvard by one and to Siena in OT. I really like seeing those close games because it shows they are capable of getting there but now they just have to win. I hope they can get some more wins in March.

UMBC (1-2)

Week one the Retrievers were able to beat a good Richmond team but they haven't gotten a win since. They were upset by Mount St. Mary's and lost to Navy as expected. I really thought this team would be doing better by now but it's still early. I think they will do good as we turn the page to March and once they get into America East play.

Vermont (5-0)

Someone let the Catamounts out! Vermont has been rolling thus far in 2018. I really like what I see from Coach Fiefs and his boys up in Burlington. I know with Ian McKay being back after an injury in 2017 he has made a huge impact. Vermont has beaten Furman, Mercer, Fairfield, Holy Cross, and Quinnipiac. They have beaten all five of those teams by some significant margins as well. The America East needs to watch out as we turn the page and get closer to conference play. The Catamounts will continue to roar!

Villanova (4-0)

Another team that has surprised so far this season. Villanova is a really good team and they have shown it. They upset Penn State in their season opener in OT. They defeated Yale in Texas at the Patriot Cup in OT. Then they have gone on to Hofstra and Drexel. Drexel gave them a scare but they were able to over come and get the win. Villanova is for real. The Big East needs to look out for the Wildcats as conference play grows closer.

Virginia (4-0)

The Cavaliers are a great team and they have shown that throughout this first month of the season. That offense they have is just amazing. They started the season beating Loyola in double overtime and then a Drexel domination the next week. The Wahoos struggled against High Point but was able to overcome that and got the win. They ended February with a win over Princeton in a game that was a shootout! It was a great game to watch. Virginia will continue to see success as we flip the page to March. I really feel that Virginia will get an ACC win this year as they haven't in a while.

VMI (1-1)

The Keydets have one win and one loss as we move into March. They lost to Manhattan and they beat NJIT. I really think VMI can be good once they get some momentum if any at all. They are a very low caliber team and it's just good to see them have a win after the first month of the season. As they get closer to SoCon play I am not sure they will get more than one win. That's the truth. I hope they do though. I really want them to finally get over that hump of one and two win seasons that have plagued this program for the past 5 seasons.

Wagner (1-2)

The Seahawks are much in the same boat as VMI. They have one win coming into March and that lone win was over Manhattan. They have losses against Lafayette in 2 OT's and Monmouth. I really am not sure how many more wins Wagner can rack up this season but I hope they get some more. They have the lacrosse know how and I have seen it. They just need to get over that hump of being historically average or below average and they can get some good wins. As they move into March and into NEC play it will be harder to get wins for them. They need to find momentum soon.

Yale (2-1)

The Bulldogs have two wins but they are still figuring things out in some areas. Yale lost to Villanova down in Texas at the Patriot Cup. That was an overtime game. They have won two games since then and those wins were over Michigan and UMass. Both those games were pretty close and could have been upsets. Yale needs to figure out how to take the whole load off of Ben Reeves. He is a great player but he can't do it all. Yale needs to improve that D as well. If they don't make some adjustments they could struggle in the Ivy League with how tough that conference is this year. I really want to see how Yale adjust and improves as we turn the page to March. Then I might jump on the Yale wagon.
