SoCon Report : Week 3

Week three has come and past as every single SoCon team has now played at least one game on the season. There were some pretty games and then some not so pretty games this week. No matter what we will get to all of them.

Air Force (1-2)

The Falcons traveled to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday. This one was going to be tough but not as tough as last week when the Falcons took on Denver. Marist is good but not that good.
This game was a very close one the whole way. Air Force was able to pull out the win over Marist by a score of 8-7. The Falcons really leaned on senior attackman Nick Hruby as he put up 6 goals in this game. That is all of Air Force's points except 2. Hruby really played well and seems to be filling in that hole where Chris Walsch was before the scandal. I think Air Force is finally starting to figure things out and its good that its still early in the season. The Falcons will welcome Cleveland State next Friday for what should be an Air Force win.

Bellarmine (1-2)

Bellarmine had two games this week. Tuesday they traveled to Michigan and they played at home against Cleveland State on Saturday. The Knights went 1-2 on the week as they lost 9-7 to Michigan in Ann Arbor and they defeated Cleveland State 13-9 to get their first win of the season. Ian Miller is back from injury so that should really help the Knights offense moving forward. Also, Bellarmine seems to be gelling well now and getting into the groove of things. They had a ton of energy on Saturday despite the awful weather.

Furman (0-3)

Coming off of a great showing last week as they took UNC to overtime the Paladins had to face Sacred Heart in a neutral site game at Homewood Field on the Campus of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. This game was not streamed and that stunk but we do have stats and game recaps to give us insight. This game was pretty close all game but Sacred Heart really had just a little bit of an upper hand all game. Literally both teams were very close to even in every stat, as I expected. This really could have gone either way. Furman will play anther neutral site game next week against Canisus in Philadelphia. Furman should be able to get their first win next week.

High Point (0-3)

The Panthers had two tough games this week. On Tuesday they took on Georgetown in a 15-5 loss and then they took on the almighty Maryland Terrapins at home. High Point was able to show Maryland who they were though. They played Maryland very close as they have in the past as well. Even with the great play on both sides of the ball Maryland's talent pushed them to victory. the final of that game ended up being 16-14 in Maryland's favor. The Panthers next contest is on Tuesday against Virginia.

Jacksonville (1-2)

The Dolphin's had another very tough game this week as they traveled to Milwaukee to take on Marquette. Jacksonville did take a loss but they made sure Marquette knew who they were before they left. Leaning on Eric Applegate's 3 goals and 2 assist, the Dolphins played Marquette very close and lost 11-10. This was another very impressive showing from Jacksonville and they continue to show the SoCon and the country that they are a team to be respected. The Dolphins will have two home games next week as they will play Detroit Mercy on Tuesday and Ohio State on Saturday. Should be a great week for them.

Mercer (1-2)

The Bears had a date with Detroit Mercy on Sunday at home in what was an overtime thriller. The Bears eded up losing 8-7 in overtime to cap off their second game this week. They traveled to Cleveland State on Tuesday and won in overtime. The Bears are really figuring out how to play with this new squad but they are still young. The Bears will have a week off to prepare for a date with North Carolina on Wednesday, February 28th.

Richmond (1-1)

The Spiders took on Bucknell at home on Saturday and they were able to pull out their first win of the season. Richmond is still figuring some things out as they have only played two games thus far but they know one thing so far. That thing is that Teddy Hatfield is good and will lead this offense in 2018. They just need to get their D down and they should be fine. The Spiders have two games next week as they play Mount St. Marys at home on Tuesday and away at Notre Dame on Saturday.

VMI (0-1)

VMI opened their season on Saturday with a 12-7 loss at Manhattan. VMI is for sure one of the bottom teams in the SoCon and the NCAA. They really have to find out how to have success and see how many wins they can put up this season. They did good in the GB game so we know they have grit and hustle but they can't be turning the ball over 16 times a game if they want any kind of success. Again, this was their first game so they are still feeling things out. The Keydets next game will be on the road versus NJIT next Saturday.
