NLL Preview: Rochester Knighthawks

Welcome to our second NLL team preview. This is the second of nine total NLL team previews that we will be dong leading up to opening night. Yesterday we rolled out our first preview which previewed the Buffalo Bandits. Today we will be going 1 hour  east to Rochester and take a look at the Rochester Knighthawks. As of right now we are 8 days away from the start of the NLL season.

The Knighthawks finished 4th out of 5th in the East last season with a record of 7-11. Rochester has kind of dropped off since Joe Walters retired after all those great NLL Finals runs that they had. The past two years however the Knighthawks have had the same record, 7-11, and finished in the same exact place in the east. I know the Knighthawks are ready to make a jump back to the top of the ranks of the NLL. Many said that Rochester won the NLL draft so that should help them a ton in this revamp and help get them back to the top.

Rochester will open the 2018 season December 9th at home vs the Calgary Roughnecks. These teams met  only once last season and Calgary took that game 11-9. That game last year was played in Rochester as well. Now, The Georgia Swarm are really the biggest threat in the east this season followed by the Toronto Rock and New England Black Wolves. I feel that Rochester can be a threat but it will take some time due to the guys they got from the draft.

   Key Players:

Dan Dawson:
Position: Forward

Dan Dawson is about to attack his 14th season in the NLL. This is obviously where most of the experience and leadership should come from as I feel it has in past years. Dawson has many years under his belt which should really help guide this new group of young guys that they have on the roster. Dawson only played in 15 game last season and he scored a total of 18 goals. Add those goals along with 36 assist and 54 points and that is a pretty good season. Now, that is his lowest amount of points, goals, and assist ever but last season was also the first time he played in less than 16 games. I think Dawson will be a huge factor this year and in years to come in terms of guiding the younger guys.

Billy Dee Smith
Position: Defense

Another veteran guy that will be entering his 14th season in a few weeks. Billy Dee Smith has spent every season in Buffalo with the Bandits so this is his first season with the Knighthawks. Evan though he is in a new environment for the first time in 14 years I think Smith can get the job done. He had bee proven at every level, every year and is possibly the best Box defenseman of all time. Of course that come with some argument as some might beg to differ. I think that Smith is also a guy who can help mentor the young guys and help bring them up into speed. This should be interesting to see how he fits into Rochester's system. Can he help bring back the dominance?
